Idlewild Heritage Trail by Merrell
This is a proposed heritage trail preserving the stories of the people, places, businesses, and landmarks that shaped Idlewild. The Black Footwear Forum brings it to Detroit as an example of what's to come; the real trail will be in Idlewild and will grow well beyond the 20 stops.

LeeJon’s Novelty Shop

Built in 1949 by John and Leona Simmons, LeeJon’s began as a confectionery and gift shop offering a soda bar, souvenirs and everyday goods. Places like LeeJon’s show the range of Black-owned businesses that once supported Idlewild’s thriving visitor economy — and the possibilities for reusing historic commercial spaces today.
