This is a proposed heritage trail preserving the stories of the people, places, businesses, and landmarks that shaped Idlewild. The Black Footwear Forum brings it to Detroit as an example of what's to come; the real trail will be in Idlewild and will grow well beyond the 20 stops.

Sweetheart Motel

Once one of Idlewild’s most popular motels, the eleven-unit Sweetheart welcomed visitors and performers during the 1950s and 1960s. Entertainers including Joe “Ziggy” Johnson stayed here while working Idlewild’s celebrated entertainment circuit. Its surviving structure offers an opportunity to show how historic places can be adapted for new generations.
